Designing for the user

The one thing I’ve noticed about Apple is that they always have the user in mind and strive for the best user experience. It’s all the in the details. Their MagSafe power plug can be plugged in two ways, since their is no preferred direction. Normally, one would design it to be circular like my old dell, but their adapter must be symmetric to allow for the magnetic locking. Every time I plug in a usb device I have to try the connector both ways, but I don’t even have to look with the MagSafe connector.

Revaluation

For efficiency’s sake, I shouldn’t do what I’m best at, but what I’m better than most people. Let’s assume you have 3 people, A, B, C and they have duties 1, 2, 3 each with a point value and only one person can do each task. The goal is to have the total net amount of points.

1 2 3
A 70 50 10
B 60 10 10
C 10 20 30

It we assigned them according to maximum points in a greedy way, A would do task 1, C would do task 3 and B would do task 2 for a total of 110 points. If instead we made A do task 2 even though it is not A’s best task, then B would do task 1 and C would still do task 3 for a total of 140 points. We should all do things that we excel at compared to other people and not in the absolute sense. To make the largest impact, you need to do something that only you can do well and no one else can.

The question now is what in the world should I be spending my time on. Now can I as one person hope to make a difference in this vast world of ours. To better answer this, I should add a dash of selfishness and provide an additional restriction of making myself happy. You need to have fun living your life.

Conversion to OS X

I made the jump from Windows to the Mac.

A few things that helped and brought about the switch

  • OS X is based on freeBSD
  • I tried a Hackintosh
  • iPhone development requires a Mac
  • I’m comfortable with Linux now
  • Firefox in Ubuntu 9.04 crashes
  • Virtualization works well enough for me, I need to virtualize XP on Vista anyways
  • The new MacBook Pro has a lithium polymer battery with lots of battery life
  • I no longer have time to tinker, I just want things to work

Pleasant things I’ve found

  • Everything works and is so well integrated
  • I love multi-touch
  • I was reluctant to move away from Mozilla applications, but the Mac ones do nicely
  • Simplification makes me unlearn things for the better
  • Technology has changed, but I’ve still been using old tech. Now I’m upgrading and starting fresh
  • The design of the MacBook Pro is just beautiful like a work of art
  • I find everything is easy to do.
  • I’m starting to like the iPod Touch

So far, I really like the Mac. I had buyer’s remorse two days ago, but it’s gone now.
